For Living Room, Deborah Joyce Holman’s largest solo exhibition to date, the artist centres their attention on the anti-spectacular. Building on their previous works’ explorations of the durational, this presentation engages non-performance and minimal narrative structure.
Operating through the lens of film, the artist manipulates interior and the exterior worlds and their material articulations, bringing them into sharp focus through stagings of the mundane. Traditionally, these scenes are deployed as transitional and contextual.
Their ongoing practice of painting, moving image, sound, and installation explores the strategies and sites of refusal across Black and queer contemporary and antecedent visual culture.
